We have never turned off the water or the heat, but usually aren't gone for more then 2 months at a time. Someone comes and waters the plants and checks every few days. If a pipe broke the water would run out the basement drain. I think if there was much damage it would be the same if we were home.
you really believe if a pipe broke upstairs and ran for 24-48+ hours before someone checked on the house it would simply drain out the basement drain and all would be well??
you seriously have to be kidding us here??
The house was built in 1790 and has wide boards for flooring and the cracks are not water tight. The basement floor is dirt and often in the spring has a small trickle of water running thru it as do some other houses around here. The only pipes upstairs are heat pipes and they won't leak much if you don't add water.
