Sizing it all up

Greetings. So this is a super newb type question. I searched and browsed and looked around at Class C forum topics.

So when a MH is advertised as a certain footage, does that mean bumper to bumper?

We are thinking of stepping into the C world and my parking limitations regulate the length.

To expand on that, If I'm seeing a 25 footer, can I assume that the RV body is about five feet less to take the Van front portion in account?

Sorry and thanks.

    No Sorry! Only WELCOME!!!

If I had to guess, the "length" is from the front of the cabover to the rear of the house. Our 31-ft is a little over 32-ft bumper to bumper.

It depends on what you're looking at. If you go by the manufacturer's model designation, you'll more than likely be off by a foot or more. I had a 21A that was actually 22'long. My 22RK is 24' long and my 31K is 32 1/2' long.
  • My Winnebago 29B is actually 30 feet long and with the bike carrier in the hitch it's an additional three feet longer.
  • Our Tioga Model 26Q is actually 27 feet long fr0m front bumper to protuding ladder on the back. Most brands are slightly longer than the measurements given in the specs. Can be important re your driveway space.
  • If the specifications say 29' 8" long, that is a measurement bumper to bumper, and may not include add-ons like spare tire mounts, hitch receivers, ladders even if standard equipment.

If they say width 100" or 101" or 102", that is outer skin to outer skin, not including awning parts, mirrors, door handles, latches, clearance lights, and maybe not even vents and covers for appliances.

If you are talking about a number in a model designation like "29B" that is not an advertised measurement of anything, it is simply a model designation. You will only confuse yourself if you try to interpret that designation to be a description of the RV, since different manufacturers make up those names in different ways.

How much of the overall length will be house, how much is cab, depends on the cab chassis used. Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, VW, M-B Sprinter cabs are all different lengths. The length of Ford, Chevy and Dodge changed over the years but have been stable for a long time, last Dodge was unchanged for something like 20 years. The Sprinter has changed cab length since it's introduction to N. America.
  • Our "23P" is spec'd out at 24'10". I added a spare tire that probably adds another 8" with tire and mounting bracket so nose to tail we are 25' and change. In boating your 32 footer becomes 30' when paying for a slip but 36' when your bragging. :B

Just one more way that boats and RV are similar. :C
  • Other replies have nailed the length measurement info. Another measurement to be aware of is that most RV bed sizes are not standard. Most are a little shorter and narrower than "standard" sizes. So, an advertised queen might be 54X76 instead of 60X80.
