I'm not comfortable parking off back roads but there are so many places in the west and midwest you can overnight for free that I rarely stay in campgrounds. Herded in like cattle, noisy people, so-so facilities, etc. National parks are one thing (you want to overnight in one, you pay) just like most state and county parks.
Fortunately, there are countless alternatives - churches, schools (when closed), hospitals, etc. I'm in my B at night with a book or an iPod. I don't need to pay for hook-ups, views, activities, etc.
And to you judgmental types, it's none of your da** business.
