I have a friend who just bout a new Winnebago Class C. He said in order to put the slide out the ignition has to be on or the engine has to be running? I did not question it because I have never had...

I know he has two batteries for just the coach the truck has it's own battery. So, wouldn't the slide work on just the coach batteries?
Yes, it might. But the draw down on them will be significant, particularly if they're already depleted after camping for a while. The idea of running the engine is to "help" the coach batteries handle the electrical load which is translated to mechanical power (torque?) from the slide motors, when he hits the "extend/retract" button. Nothing complex, just that the engine alternator is a better/best source of electricity to recharge/replenish the coach batteries while the slide is operating.
