small leak at water pump

We are new to RVing and just purchased an 06 Country Coach. We have a small leak at our water pump that appears to be coming from where the 1/2" strainer goes into the Flojet 04406-143 Type IV multi-fixture water pump. I can't see how the strainer attaches to the pump. Does it just snap in or is there some kind of holding mechanism. Is this leak likely to be from an improper connection between the strainer and pump, or problems within the pump such as bad diaphragm? I am reluctant to purchase a new pump and strainer if there is just a loose connection...

As an aside, in addition to the water leak at the strainer, when we open a faucet inside, there are sometimes spurts of air like there is still air in the lines. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

  • I know on my older ShurFlo Pump with strainer, all connections are made with "clips" and if those clips are not seated properly, a leak can occur. I have in the past purchased extra "clips" to replace ones that had lost their holding ability.

  • Is this your strainer:

If so, pull the blue keepers to release the strainer. Then replace the O-ring.
  • The clear screen cover on mine unscrews. This was the one place every year I would develop a leak despite winterizing. For me it was usually the clear screen cover itself that would crack. I guess it's a low point and water still got in there and froze even though I flushed with anti freeze. Cheap and easy fix to buy a replacement at the local rv dealer. I keep several on hand now.
  • Look for a latch to release the strainer, clean and then check/replace the O ring or seal. The strainer should be on the intake side and may be the source of the air.
  • The strainer is on the inlet side of the water pump. If it is leaking that means that the pump is also sucking air when it is running, which could cause the air in your water output.
I'm not familiar with your particular pump but on mine the strainer easily disconnected for cleaning and there was a rubber gasket that prevented it from leaking. The input water line had a connector to disconnect to service the filter.
