Smart Wheel acting up

I’m having trouble with my smart wheel. When I flashed my courtesy lights, the windshield wipers came on and I couldn’t turn them off. Plus, nothing else worked on the smart wheel including the horn. So, I pulled over and shut the ignition off and the wipers stopped and stayed off after turning the ignition back on. Continued driving and everything worked fine for a few miles until I hit the resume on cruise and then windshield wipers came on again and couldn’t be turned off with a dead smart wheel. I called the company and they advised it could be the clock spring which I then removed the top cover and didn’t see anything obvious. I tightened the center steering wheel nut and got a little more than an eighth of a turn and also cleaned the J1 connectors with some good electrical spray. One thing I’m not sure of is the clock spring. I couldn’t identify it with the center cover removed. There is a 4 wire connector in there with the wires routed down close to the center. Does anyone know what the clock spring looks like and where to get one, or even just the part number? I assume the whole steering wheel has to be removed? We’re in Anthem, AZ right now, right outside of Phoenix. Thanks for any insight.

  • Thanks for all the inputs. We have an appointment tomorrow with Massey truck and RV repair.

  • A "clock spring" is under the steering wheel. You will need to have the steering wheel pulled and the clock spring replaced. Its job is to make all the electrical connections to the buttons on the smart wheel. After awhile they can break and cause all kinds of problems.
  • I looked at the freightliner parts and it shows the clock part number is trw455068. It is located under the turn signal assembly. On my smart wheel it is grounded through the wiper motor. When I had trouble with my wipers I found that I was not getting any spark when I disconnected the single wire on my motor. I went to my main controller box and disconnected all J connectors. It was on the driver side floor against the front fire wall next to the side wall. I cleaned the connectors and stated reconnecting the J2 first then the rest of them. I then had spark at the ground wire on the wiper motor. Everything worked after that.
  • Might check with the Freightliner dealer in Phx. They work on Motorhomes. Good people.
There is also a board probably under the dash that handles the smart wheel.
  • I had to look it up. I've never heard of the Smart Wheel.
I'm not a gadget person. It does look interesting.
