Have you calculated the voltage drop on 30 feet of #10 at 30 amps and 17 volts? It is 11% which would drop voltage to 15.13--a higher number than handy suggests.
That is 510 watts of panels--more than most folks need. For 20 amps (340 watts) the loss drops to 7.5% which works out to about 15.75 volts.
My own system is Mppt and line losses are less than 1%.
