Hi. We have a 27 foot, Class C that we have taken on two trans-USA trips. Never needed or felt we needed a toad. We drove into small towns, beach parking areas, remote state parks, grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, etc. and just didn't need a toad. This is a personal choice, and I know others always feel a need for a toad. But, I don't think you *need* one. Often on trips, our two adult children join us, so we have four adults sleeping comfortably in our rig.
The issue regarding un-hooking is a valid point, but if we are going to use the RV the next day for a day trip, we only hook-up the electric. So, un-hooking requires only walking out and un-plugging the electric cord. Besides, I like to fill up the black and gray tanks as much as possible before dumping, so I don't connect the hose unless I'm ready to dump. I use fresh water from the tank and fill the tank as necessary, so no water hose to dis-connect usually.
We do level the RV with blocks, and yes sometimes I needed to block 3 wheels. And, yes, sometimes on a day trip I've needed to take the RV off the blocks and put it back on later in the day. But, that is an infrequent, minor thing that is just part of RVing IMHO.
I think your idea of going to Hershey is a good one. We did that several times before buying our RV. I would suggest that you allow your spouse and children to provide some input into the type of RV that best fits your needs. But, as the primary and perhaps only driver, I would not hesitate to voice your opinions about drive-ability of any unit under consideration as well as the care and upkeep of any unit. Best wishes for success. Bob
Thanks, Bob. This is great...and where my initial line of thinking was. Fact is, we don't full-time. We take 9-11 trips per year -- for 4 days at a time. Sometimes a few more or less. I gotta think we don't need perfect in any one area -- just "enough". I'm trying to teach the kids to be more adaptable -- which may mean sleeping in a dinette or together. Lowering the dinette table into position, filling in with two cushions, and grabbing my daughters, sleeping bag and pillow from the over cab bed a few times per trip is really no big deal for us. If I had to do this 365 days/year, it might get old. But really....hearing everyone's experiences is very helpful and adds lots of food for thought. Thank you.
