Spare tire...drive or steer?

For folks who run different tires for drive and steer axles AND who carry a spare: Is your spare a drive or a steer tire? Seems like it would make more sense for it to be a steer, but I couldn't find this info via search.

(And yes I do understand that many consider carrying a spare unnecessary. This question is for those who DO carry a spare.)

Thanks!!

I run two different size tires... 315 on front and 11R/22.5 on the 6 rear. I carry a 295/80/22.5 steer unmounted spare on my roof which is what came on the MH. If I can get the correct size tire at a decent price when needed I'll leave my spare on the roof. If not I'll use it to get to where I can get the correct size at a good price. I carry a unmounted spare so I do not have to bend over when stuck on the side of the road.
OP, unless you are going to carry a new spare tire which you would leave on the ground (a steer tire) I would carry the best of what you took off regardless of tread.
  • I have Sailun Regional Drive TIRE- S737 all around on my MH, and I carry a spare from the POs tires which is a steer tire. When I get new tires, in 7-10 years, I will use one of my drive tires for a spare to match the drive tires that will be in all positions. I opted for drive tires all around as we drive our MH year round and did not want a steer tire when we are in slush or on snow.
  • Steer of course. I carry one but I have the same tires at all 6 positions. Hankook AH11's
