Spin On Filter Removal

This is embarrassing – how do you remove the clear plastic separator hanging off the bottom of the fuel/water separator (a FS1242 filter, on an ISB engine)? I’m sure it should spin off, but I can’t get it to turn with my hands. I tried putting a filter wrench on it and applied some pressure, no movement. I’m afraid I’ll crack the plastic if I pull harder.

I can’t get the filter body off either, as my filter wrench isn’t large enough to go over the lip of that plastic canister (it will fit over the body of the filter, just not the plastic lip). But, even if I got the entire filter off, I’d still need to remove that clear plastic separator for the new filter.

Thx,
  • Wrap an old piece of intertube around it. The plastic bowl should not be too tight to remove by hand. Loosen it just a little (not enough to leak) before removing the whole filter. If already removed, place in a vice to hold the metal part.

If it is, you can use a pair of water pump pliers.
  • If you have the wire connected disconnect that first.
I always used a small pipe wrench or channel locks.
To get the filter off a nice old belt with a buckle works nice.or they sell a clamp filter wrench
or drain it and shove a screw driver through it and turn it .
    righty righty left loosely lol
  • Getcha one of these...

Every tool box needs a strap wrench as one size fits all. Take the entire filter off and then resting one side on a hard surface, tap the metal on the opposite side above the plastic bowl with a hammner. Once you go all the way around several times it should come off by hand. I replaced mine with a Wix 33405 which does not have the plastic bowl, but it does have a drain for $15.
  • Thanks for the suggestions - I finally got if off. I washed and dried my hands, washed and wiped the plastic bowl, grasped and turned as hard as my hands allowed (for about 4 - 5 seconds). Repeated 3 times. It finally budged. The rest of the job was easy.
  • I have a vise grip wrench that is made for filters. Saved mu butt a few times. I lossen mine from the bedroom hatch. Easier to get to.
