Yes - check out this thread. They did a great job outfitting their cargo van with the necessities they need. It's not as complete as our B, but it works for them and it sounds like something similar would work for you.
Good luck!
Thank you! That's me and my Transit :-)
To the OP - there's a huge subculture of converted cargo vans. Mine is pretty basic (and easy!) but some are works of art and technology. I also frequent the FordTransitUSA forum which has a special section for camping conversions; I would assume Sprinter and Promaster have similar sites. The biggest advantage of DIY is getting exactly what you need. In my case, I can stuff a 12-1/2' kayak inside mine (and I have a bed long enough for 6'3" Ed); others are mountain bikers or snowboarders. The average Class B doesn't provide the necessary gear storage for many pursuits.
We just returned from a trip to Glacier National Park. Our van isn't quite 20', so we drove several roads (Going-to-the-Sun; and the Beartooth Pass) that are size-restricted. Parking is as easy as a large-sized sedan. Our Ecoboost motor climbed 10% grades with ease and still got around 18 mpg (we have the mid-roof height). We are happy camping in the van - it feels a lot roomier than our previous 8' truck camper.
One of the most detailed builds I've ever read (it's a Transit, but in most cases, the info translates to other brands), is by 2 Canadian engineers, Antoine and Isabelle, who left their jobs and are living out of their van, snowboarding or mountain biking. Their journal is www.faroutride.com
