Sprinter Chassis RV

We are looking to downsize to a Sprinter Chassis from a Class A gas guzzler. 7 to 8 mpg just is not enough with gas prices these days.
For those who have them, especially pre 2010, how are the holding up? any problems? Looking too get good and bad reviews so I know what to look out for.

Thanks !!!

Joanne

  • We just down sized to a 2013 View Profile 24g from a 38ft Diesel Pusher and love it. Not for Mileage but for eze of having a smaller RV. Now we can not only go anywhere we can BOTH drive. It is so much easier to use, we visited 27 states over the years and plan on visiting them all over again. This time we can travel back roads AND interstates.
  • I suggest doing some more math first. You will likely take a BIG hit moving from your class A.

Will you be making payments on the new RV? Split the payments by the miles you drive each month, and add that to your fuel-cost per mile. I strongly suspect you'll find the more fuel efficient motorhome is not more cost efficient, especially since you already have one now. Even comparing 2 new coaches, the extra cost of the Sprinter will take a VERY long time to recoup.
  • Gasoline was more expensive than diesel in most of the country this weekend. Looks like diesel took a big jump yesterday nationally. Around here gasoline is still more expensive than diesel.
  • We have an '08 Winne on an '07 chassis. No problems at all. Just normal maintenance, which is no more costly than other brands, with the exception of oil changes. The MB takes 13 quarts of a specific synthetic oil, so you will pay a bit more than you would when changing other brands. Then again, you only have to change every 10k miles, so it's a small price to pay. You can easily order what you need for normal regular maintenance through the internet.

As for fuel mileage -- yes, you can't beat a Sprinter, but they do cost more to buy. I tell people *don't* buy a Sprinter-based MH merely because of fuel mileage. Instead, consider it if you want a small MH that rides and handles better than anything else out there, while making less cabin noise/heat in a cabin that is much more expansive in all directions than the others.
  • My work has several Sprinter vans, in service, so they get 25,000 miles a year, and the transmissions seem to go out around 100,000 - 112,000 miles.

  • Go here and see for yourself from the premier gang of Sprinter based RV owners.

    Other advantages:

It doesn't drive like a Ford
Your copilot/navigator can keep both legs.
You don't have the racket of an engine in the cab with you...or the associated heat.
  • Advantages of a Sprinter:

    They hold their resale value.
    The Mercedes logo.
They are the top dog when it comes to MPG.
    They are reliable.

    Disadvantages:
Finding service on a Sprinter chassis rig may be problematic.
There is a cost premium around $15-20k over a Ford, and that cash can buy a lot of gasoline.

If you are looking to downsize, and don't mind waiting a year or two, Ford is putting out their new chassis offering next year, and Dodge is putting out a cab chassis which is very class C friendly (www.fiatcamper.com) later this year.

Both the Ford and the Fiat *cough* Dodge will be very good chassis offerings, and will have MPG comparable to the Sprinter, but will also have gasoline models available.
