Starting Problems with 2000 model E350 Super Duty Triton v10

The motor on our Shasta Motorhomee doesn’t start on the first turn, but generally on the second go.

On the first turn :
it sounds as if the starter motor has no load on it,
it fires a little but not enough to start.

The second turn it starts, but runs a little rough for a second or two.

This started to do this yesterday and is consistently doing this.

Can anyone offer assistance.

Thanks
  • Thanks for all the advice and help.

We have put one can of sea foam into the tank and the improvement was immediate.

We will put another in as it does play up now and again.

    Thanks all.
  • How many miles on your unit? Sounds as if the starter is failing. The sound you described likely means the starter gears are not meshing with the flywheel. That's a symptom of what omjones posted. The torque of the starter motor "throws" the Bendix gear into the flywheel gears, but if it is wearing out, sometimes it is too weak to engage. Starting the second time is a usual symptom as well. The rough start may be due to leaving the key on while you wait for the second try and thereby accumulating too much fuel. While less likely, your flywheel may have some broken teeth which would not allow a full engagement of the Bendix gear. All of that is a possibility and worth a look by you or your mechanic. If you know how to take the starter off, many of the auto parts stores can bench check it to determine if stater is getting weak. Hope some of that helps.
  • put couple cans of sea foam in the tank, you might have a little water. it will clean up the fuel system.
  • change fuel filter if it hasn't been done in awhile. Also check air filter
