The rub is other states you travel through can cite you for an out of date inspection even though you have an extension form NYS. I do not know about Massachusetts but you might want to check about being out of date in another state.
Other states would be very unlikely to cite an out of stater for having an outdated inspection sticker, since they have not broken any laws of the state they happen to be in. I'm not aware of any states with reciprocal vehicle inspection laws.
