Steering Stabilizer

I have restored a 1989 Fleetwood/Bounder 31' Class A MH. I took it out on a road trip in I-10 over New Year's and was thoroughly intimidated by the 50' tractor/trailer rigs attempting to blow me off the road. My question: By installing a "Safe T Plus" Steering Stabilizer on my rig help to control the push from the air pocket from the big rigs? I already have the stabilizer, it was in a compartment in the motorhome. Has anyone had this kind of experience?

  • My problem isn't loose steering. It is keeping control of the mothorhome on the freeway when a big rig enters my air space. It wants to blow me into the shoulder of the road. A bit white knuckle for the wife on the passenger side, if ya know what I mean.
  • Can you get more +caster on the P series? From my experience on the Ford E450 it helps to reduce or eliminate loose steering at highway speeds.
  • I have replaced the air bags, new bilstein shocks, new tires with 100 psi. ball joints seems to be in good shape.
  • Yes, with the P, start with known weakpoints:

Front air bags-- what PSI do you carry, or have you replaced with Henderson springs?

How much play in the bell cranks, particularly the driver's side bell crank?

Have you checked the ball joints?
  • After looking at your profile that says "1989 31 ft. Class A Bounder, Gas 454 cu.in. ", I assume your motorhome is built on the Chevy P30 chassis.

I have no experience with that one, but I do have a document I snagged off the internet several years ago titled P chassis alignment process.

I just did a search, and you can snag a copy from here

    I hope it helps.

  • Safe T Plus is a very good steering stabilizer.

But, there is NO silver bullet that will overcome basic suspension issues. So, start with checking suspension parts for wear. Tire pressure for your actual wheel position/axle loads, etc.

Absolutely, if you already have it, install it. BUT do not neglect the basics.

Tell us what chassis you have and we can point to possible failure points to check.
