Step cover

We have a new to us, Georgetown motorhome. It has a middle entrance door.We have always had the door up front by the passenger seat. In the other motorhomes, there was an automatic step cover to cover the stairwell. This one does not.

Any suggestions as to where to buy a cover for the stairwell, or what to do to cover it?

Worry about grandkids getting up during the night and falling into the open space of the steps.

Thanks for your help!

  • I would hinge a section of butcherblock 3/4 - 1" thick of the left wall so it could be pulled up and latched while travel.......easy
  • Thank you all for your comments.

Looks like we have a DIY project!!

Have grandchildren who travel with us and that is who I am worried about with the stair well open.

    Thanks all
  • It's a good idea to cover it. I had initially had DH cut the board to cover it as we had an old dog that was attracted to the steps like metal to a magnet.

He is gone now, and I had stopped using it, but keep it behind the one seat. Last year when we had the GS along on a trip, he woke us up in the middle of the night with a blood curdling scream.... by the time I got out there (he sleeps on the sofa) he was at the door trying to get out. He wasn't really awake. I had a dog gate propped across there that night, and that's all that kept him from falling down the steps.

Then last fall, on a trip, at 3 am a car alarm went off. I got up to see what was going on and I actually missed my footing and fell down in that step-well. Ouch!

Since then, I put the board down at night. Lesson learned.
  • No standard step opening. So you need a custom DIY.
  • I can't think of anything except making your own with some wood covered with carpet. Meanwhile I would probably get a big bean bag and stick it in the hole when everyone was in for the night, at least if anyone falls in, it will be a soft landing. I bet the dealer could help you out with some ideas. Good luck.
  • We got a nice finished board at Lowe's. DH just cut it to fit over the steps. When not in use, we just stand it up behind the seat right inside the door.
