Wayne, I think the main issue with 'attached' storage compartments is that you can't have pass through compartments. I keep my 6' ladder in one bay and just slide it in as we have two pass-through bays (one with a roll-out drawer).
If bending over under a slide is a problem, maybe the attached compartments might work better for you.
The attached compartments also need more room as you can hit bushes, fencing or a water spigots. That's exactly what happened to us when we rented a 2006 Fleetwood Expedition. I was opening the slide and my co-pilot was out looking for low tree branches not thinking about the water spigot. Well, the slide-out with the attached compartments pushed the spigot back and broke it off. We had quite a flood; we never thought to look down. The parks water had to be turned off for half the park for 45 minutes. We pulled the drapes and made martini's as we so embarrassed. The park manager was so nice about as it was a true accident.
With our current coach, I have many times opened our slides over bushes, low poles, etc. That would not work with attached compartments.
