strange things happening

We have a 2007 winnie destination, rear engine gas. We are in Arizona in a campground with full hook ups. We have a surge protector, at the power pedastle. This unit has a heat pump. Everything was working fine until the other morning we turned on the heat using electric and it kicked over to gas. It was in the mid 50's out, so no reason to use gas. We turned on water heat, using electric and it did not heat water. turned on gas, worked fine. everything else seems to be fine..
Have looked for and hit every fuse we can find.
Any clues or hints??
  • as i mentioned originally the water heater is not working on electric either. strange happenings..

Nothing sounds silly at this point. We have checked every breaker and fuse in the rig. Oh for things to be labeled.. apparently the person who was supposed to do that in this rig took the day off.

A true, ACTUAL, heat pump reverses the refrigerant heat/cool cycle to heat the inside and COOL the outside. Some dealer's misrepresent A/C's with electric heating coils as heat pumps, or maybe they just don't understand the difference.

Heating with gas uses a furnace...not typically referred to as a heat pump.

Electric RV hot water heater is something I never knew existed, too many BTUs required.

I take it you have done this before, without problems?

Not familiar with your heat pump setup, but is it set up to only run when plugged in to shore power, or does it work on a inverter, or both?

Does the heat pump have a reset button?

The OP said heat pump cools but does not heat.. Not sure why it would do that short of a control systems failure.

If your surge protector does not give error messages it's not a surge protector it is a spike supressor.. UPGRADE.

thanks for the thoughts. Checked voltage and it is fine, Our protector does not give messages.
the heat pump is working on AC, which is electric.

I may have misunderstood but didn't you say that the heat pump wasn't working? It may sound silly but you have checked the breaker panel in your coach right?

  • check your surge protector for an error message... it may have shut off power because of over or under voltage, neutral issue, polarity, ground fault, etc.....
  • Are you certain you are getting 110 volts from pedestal or does your surge suppressor have an on/off switch?
