The secret to this wrench is to grab the filter at the bottom edge of the filter, almost hanging off of the edge. Otherwise the filter will start to collapse and then the wrench is useless.
You can use something like what you just posted, but on a Caterpillar engine you would not have enough room with the engine on one side and the chassis rail on the other. What you are showing us on the clicky is good if the filter is clear around it.
