Strap wrenches and fuel filters...GGGRRRRRRRR

Time to switch the fuel filters on my old rig. Fine fuel filter and a water/fuel separator filter. I tried my bad type strap wrenches. 30 minutes later I didnt even have 1 filter broke loose. Looks like a tip tomorrow in the rain to get SOME SORT or wrench that doesn't slip and slide around the outside of the filters.... GRRRRR!!!
  • My fuel filters have never been a problem since they're right out in the open when the rear hatch is open. The big problem is the water filter. It's right next to the oil filter and has the dip stick tube running in between them. When you do get a strap wrench on it you can't get any leverage. I leave that one and a few others to Robert from RV Mobile Lube when he comes to our FMCA chapter rallies as he has a special tool for it.
I'm in the process now of changing the coolant and replacing all the hoses for the system. Gotta say, Monaco left nothing to chance of movement of the coolant lines from not being braced enough.

  • Im shopping tomorrow for sure. A chain wrench and also the giant jawed wrenches for filter removing that sorta look like channel locks at first glance but the jaws are all "weird"...but the tighter you grip...the tighter they grip the filter body.....Grrrrr....!!!!

    Thanks for the advice guys
  • They make chain wrenches that are like a strap wrench but uses a motorcycle type chain and has gripping teeth to prevent slippage.

    Sully,
I too have used the larger 6" Craftsman channel locks for that same purpose. If you've got any room at all to swing those things, they work great. Just a thought.
