Streaks on the sides coming from rubber roof

This happens all too frequent and frankly it's a pain. Is there anything I can do to minimize this problem?
Of course, thanks in advance:@

  • No rubber roof on the Eagle, it is in fact fiberglass. I have owned a fifth wheel for years and I'm trying to sell it. I think I have it sold. I was asking a question about rubber roofs, that's all--no big deal...

    Thanks
  • When the title of the post is "Streaks on the sides coming from rubber roof" i really don't know how to be any more clear. It's a rubber roof.
However, i do appreciate all responses.

It's always a good idea to let people know what type of roof you have when asking a question. I see some responses here referring to a rubber roof. If this is your coach (2006 American Eagle 43) that you're talking about than it has a fiberglass roof.

When washing the roof, make sure you get under the air conditioning unit as far as you can, take off the roof vent covers and clean everything. As mentioned once, waxing your roof with a good sealant is probably the best solution. Despite what others believe, waxing the roof does not turn your roof into a skating rink. I have waxed many fiberglass roofs and although it does repel water the best, it does not make the roof slippery. Just make sure that the roof is dry before walking around... many roofs have a precaution sticker stating, "roof is slippery when wet". Not because it had ever been waxed, just because like any smooth surface, water makes the surface slippery.
  • Wash well using Dawn, rinse well, wash again then really rinse it and dry. Then apply a good coat of wax, preferably with a buffer...after that, wash regularly when you wash the coach and put a fresh coat of wax on it once a year. When washing, remember to dry it too, unless of course you're in Phoenix during the summer...:W....Dennis
  • My coach has a lot of black on it and streaks from the white roof were a real problem. I installed this product along the roof line, and no more streaks EZE Gutters I used black, but it also comes in two shades of white.
  • Buster 747,
Well Sir, first off, what I'd do is get up on that roof and analyze it thoroughly. If you wipe your hands across any section, do you get a white "chalk" on your hands? If so, your roof, like all rubber roofs, is slowly deteriorating. Now, it's not going to disintegrate in the next ten minutes but, they all slowly do it. And, a good washing, more than once or twice a year is needed to keep the dust/road debris/accumulation of salts/acid rain etc. from doing more damage and collecting than needed.

And you don't have to use any "SPECIAL" soap. Any dish washing soap will work or, car wash soap. Those rubber roofs are way stronger than many think, in terms of being effected by something as little as soap. They don't like tree branches and strong physical damage but, any soap and a good brush will work just fine.

Now, as far as your steaks, again, you may have to wash more often to rid yourself of "aging" of the roof. Obviously the more accumulation of dust/chalk etc. up on the roof, the more it runs off and lands on the sides of the coach.

  • The streaks I am referring to are chalky. We washed the roof about 3 months ago and it is doing it again. I have recently built a separate building for housing the Big Boy but every time it rains the streaks reappear.
At this point I am wondering just how long the roof is going to last...
  • We have an aluminum roof on our motorhome. We wash and wax at least 2X per year and still get the black streaks. I have also noticed that we get them under windows that are not covered by an awning from the black frames around the windows. Is there something you can put on the frames to help protect them and stop the streaks from that? In our case it is under the driver side/passenger side windows, the little black gaskets around the wiper arms and the frames around 1 bedroom window. Does anyone use anything on the frames? I know you are not supposed to wax them.
  • Correct, black streaks come from the roof.
    Two solutions:
    1. Put extensions on your gutters..available at Camping World or any RV dealer parts dept.

    2. Wash your roof at least once a year. Be careful what soap you use or you will severely damage the roof material. Use Dawn Dish Detergent or Murphy's Oil Soap or there special soaps available from RV dealers or Camping World.
