Stupid Pet Policies

We're getting ready to head down to Florida for a few weeks, and one of our stops was to be at Jetty Park, Cape Canaveral. The pet policy at that establishment reads as follows:
  • Jetty Park Campground is pet-friendly on a limited basis, and pet owners will be held responsible for their pets at all times. Rabies expiration papers are required. Pets cannot be left unattended at any time and must remain on a leash. You may not leave your pet inside your RV if you leave the campground.. Two pet limit per site. The fee is $2.00 per pet per night. Pets are allowed only in Class A, B, and C units and travel trailers. Pets are not allowed inside any cabin. Pets are not allowed outside the campground. Pets must be walked in the designated pet walk areas ONLY. Campers are responsible for cleaning up after their pet(s). Pet owners who are not in compliance will be asked to leave the park with no refund.

We were pretty sure that the underlined text was a mistake, so we called. Nope--not a mistake and they're quite zealous about enforcing the policy. Supposedly, Jetty Park follows "state law" that prohibits leaving animals unattended in vehicles. For purposes of protecting animals, it seems pretty stupid, even by Florida standards, to consider a dog in a heated/air-conditioned RV as "unattended in a vehicle." Heck, we even leave the TV going so the dogs can keep up with the news. They're better off in the RV than they are in the house.

Anyone ever heard of such a thing? Any prospect of talking some sense into the proprietors? Any other suggestions?

  • Their park, their rules, and if they are comfortably full with RVers then it works for them. If State regulation says no animals left unattended, and since the RVs all have license plates, making them vehicles, it would appear they are following regulations. Perhaps they were cited because another camper or a neighbor filed a complaint. If my intention was stopped there for the night I would have no problem with the rules. If I were stopping for a few days, I probably would pick another campground just in case we were to go out for dinner. JMHO
  • I know, I know.
Your pets are not like those others who bark non stop when left alone in the RV.
But how can you know? You are not there.
I think the rule makes perfect sense.
  • My dog behaves better than lots of children.....I doubt that FL law was meant to include RVs any more than it would apply to the millions of house trailers in the state. House trailer---40ft 5er or 40ft DP.....Whats the difference??? I'll just remember to steer clear of that place if in that area.
  • I don't think it's stupid at all. We own two dogs. Don't like it move on.
  • Their house their rules.
Your money you decide were to spend it.

    BUT I LIKE THE RULE
  • Sounds pretty sane to me. Also following State Laws.Their park their rules.
