- downtheroadExplorerWithout much info.....I sure wouldn't be comfortable with a propane tank that is "too hot to touch."
The ticking is the sound of the tank expanding....does it release gas pressure through the safety valve when it gets that hot? - DutchmenSportExplorerI don't think I've ever experienced one that gets hots. I've experienced them getting so cold they form frost on the outside. That's just weird.
- LwiddisExplorer IINever heard of a hot propane tank. Have it checked.
- 2edgeswordExplorerCould it be exhaust from the tow vehicle that's heating the tank?
Disregard. I realize the RV being discussed isn't a travel trailer or 5th wheel. - DrewEExplorer IIYou mean the propane tank? Any idea what's making it hot--is it next to the exhaust system with no heat shield?
I agree with the others that this does not sound normal. Ticking might just be the float for the gauge (or the OPD) rattling around a bit as the liquid propane sloshes around, or something similar and benign, but there's no good reason for the tank to be getting hot to the touch.
Using propane will cool the tank, since the vaporizing of the liquid propane into gas requires that it absorb heat from the environment. In very cold weather that can be problematic, particularly if one needs to use propane vapor at a high rate (say for a generator). - mjohnwwjdExplorerI just signed in to this forum and wow are you all fast. The tank is near the door midship. The exhaust from the coach is near the tank so maybe adding a heat shield might work. I have been looking everywhere online for a similar situation but found nothing. Thank you all!
- Old-BiscuitExplorer IIII would take it to a muffler shop and have that exhaust heat shielded IMMEDIATELY.
Tank relief valve WILL spew propane if tank temps get over 130*F
Exhaust should NOT be heating the tank ....bad bad bad - mjohnwwjdExplorerThanks Old-Biscuit!
- phillygExplorer III've never heard of or experienced a hot propane tank. How about checking it with a temp gun to see how hot it actually is. I don't want to be an alarmist, but that sounds SERIOUS?
- bobndotExplorer III guess you are lucky to have found that.
How the heck did you notice that ?
I have never thought about taking the temperature of my propane tank . I think my DW would think I have really gone off the deep end regarding this rv. But I will check it now . :)
