Surge protector, Voltage regulator who comes first?

For those of you who have both which one do you put closest to shore power.

I have the Progressive Industries 50 amp Hardwire Surge Protector EMS-HW50C already installed.

Wired in under the bed near the Transfer switch.

Just picked up the Surge Guard Voltage Regulator - 50 Amp

I plan to mount these in the compartment, but then I had a thought.

Does the Surge Guard Voltage Regulator Need Surge Protection?

Or is it able to handle surges and I only need to protect the Coach?

    From TRC Web page.
    Using the TRC Voltage Regulator in conjunction with a Surge Guard RV power protection product provides the ultimate combination of low voltage and surge protection. The Surge Guard must be plugged in after or down stream of the TRC Voltage Regulator.

    I guess I fail to see the need for a voltage regulator if you have a EMS-HW50C?? :h The EMS-HW50C will only allow voltages in within the "good" range and nothing in an RV requires a tighter voltage variation.

    I have my surgeguard wired after the transfer switch. So no power gets into the coach that is unprotected including the generator.

    When I use the voltage regulator (Hughes autoformer in my case) It is between shore power and the transfer switch. Mine is not hard wired.

    I guess a better way to put it is, Is the voltage Regulator susceptible to Power Surge Damage?

    This thing cost over 600 and don't want to blow it up in the event of a Power surge or Lightning Strike.

    The booster will do no good if the PI EMS turns off power. You could also leave the booster out of the circuit unless needed for low voltage. During an electric storm consider unplugging everything. Or if you really want to go crazy get a low cost surge protector(no voltage protection) to go first, then booster, then PI EMS, and finally the RV.

    But that is what you want your surge protector to do...shut down your entire system because of low voltage to protect your appliances, etc....

    But that is what you want your surge protector to do...shut down your entire system because of low voltage to protect your appliances, etc....


    That is only 1 feature of the Surge protector.

    Which I don't need to worry about with a voltage regulator :-)

    You can not have it both ways. You either go with the power booster and hope you don't get a spike to kill it, then have the PI unit to protect the RV. Or you go with the PI which will shut down you RV power if there is a power condition problem. And if you have the booster after the PI, it will not do you any good because the PI will drop you out if the voltage is low before the booster and push-it back up. I have the PI only and it is installed after my transfer swith. JMHO Gary
