surge protector v. voltage regulator

We are heading out for a cross country trip, and are newbies! We are trying to decide on a surge protector vs. a voltage regulator. We are mostly worried about tripping a breaker, a surge, or other power outage that could turn our ac off while we're away (we will have to leave our dog at times).Ideally we can find something that can protect our heat intolerant dog while we're away and also our appliances, from these issues. We'd like to find something that has the technology to turn the ac back on once its safe. Any suggestions?
  • Surge Protector would be my choice. Then add a Generator Auto Start. I have a Magnum AGS-S in my motor home. Works well to keep inside of motorhome cool if shore power is lost when away for RV. There are other Auto Start Generator controls.
  • don't waste your time on either.

you are over thinking the whole issue regarding your dog, you have to let him out every so often so stop worrying about heat.
  • Get a Progressive Industries EMS to protect your investment and don't leave your dog to bark and bother your neighbors.

Surge Protector such as the Progressive Industries HW or PT 30 or 50 C
(HW.. Hardwired PT PorTable 30 or 50 amp) revision c)

WIll protect against high voltage, low voltage a few other things and "Blinks" by shutting you down, in the case of a "blink" it will re-connect in 3 minutes (About) this allows air conditioners to "Bleed down" so they do a cold start instead of a hot re-start which is damaging to them.

It also allows power to stablize cause when it first comes back spicks and dips abound.

Make sure you get one with a LCD

Now: Voltage Regulators.. Come in two types for this thread
Hughes Autoformer (Which is trademarked even if we use "Autoformer" in the generic around here) sense low voltage and kick in a boost winding to improve things when needed.

ONE manufacture (I forget which) also can BUCK high voltage but in the US low is more common than high by a large margain (Mexico I'm told sometimes runs high).

    My recommendation

    Park---_Autoformer---HW 30/50C---RV
  • To protect the dog you will need either an auto-start generator or a heat alarm to send you a text. Or both.

For surge, polarity, ground, and voltage protection I recommend a Progressive Industries EMS. (energy management system) Although if anything is not correct the power is shut off to protect the RV. When the issue is corrected power will be reconnected.

To prevent your RV from suffering low voltage you need a Hughes Autoformer. This boosts low campground voltage 10% when needed.
  • Progressive is by far the best. Delay is adjustable and it has a lifetime warranty. The digital display is great.
  • Progressive EMS is a must have.
Autoformer if you don't mind spending the money very good investment.
For pets the best thing i have found is the "Freeze Alarm "
Do a search on it. Chuggs has the best right up.
  • A different take...

Please ask your neighbor to keep an eye on things. Potentially torturing a pet is something that makes me shudder.
