Just purchased my first motorhome (2002 Chateau Sport) and was wondering if I NEED a surge & voltage protector. I read many threads that indicate that I must purchase one; however, the cost is a tad bit expensive. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have one and have never needed one. However, I don't have much in the way of electronics in the camper. We don't have a TV, Sat receiver, DVD, or surround sound like many people. Our microwave was $30 at Walmart. Other than the air conditioner everything else is 12v.If you have a lot of expensive electronic gear in the RV a surge protector can start to make sense.

Two years ago we were camped in a full hookup in Wash St. Stupid me, I put my surge protector away to get a early start the next morning. Not 5 min later we had low voltage and in just seconds it took out my ref, a/c/ heater. I sold my TT because of the cost to replace. Now I wish that I kept and replaced them since I cannot find a front kitchen with 14 ft slide and under 34 ft. I highly recommend surge protection !!!! This was the first time that I ever had anything fried in over 55 years of camping but that's all it takes

I use one and it has come in handy. Miss wired electrical pedestal, low voltage.

Hi,I use minimal surge protection on the converter and the fridge. Low voltage is the killer, not surge. I'd consider an autoformer long before I'd invest in a proper energy management system, because the low voltage cut out on current devices is far below my comfort level.

I confess...I've camped since 1988 without having a problem. But, I have gotten into campsites and discovered the 30 amp service wasn't working, or the 15 amp service didn't. If it only protects your rig once, it's paid for itself many times over when you think of the cost to replace a tv, circuit board of a fridge, microwave, etc. Currently, we're on a three week trip, and it's nice to plug it in first and know that the electrical service is working properly.
