it would sort of scare me to buy a "used" one. I would guess that it could have received a jolt or something and unknowingly to you not be working properly. one of our electrical gurus can comment if this is possible. don't know if there are MOVs in these things still?

Funny you should bring that up. I purchased a used one that was DOA. Contact Progressive industries and they sent me a new one under warranty.
My unit has detected 2 faulty 50 amp pedestals in a year. Not sure if I would have incurred any damage without it? But in my mind my unit has now paid for itself.
