SURGE PROTECTOR

Getting a Class A 2013 35' motorhome. It has 4 TV's, 2 AC's, Micro, Double Refrig, etc. Interested in opinions on surge protectors. Camping world has some that are "Portable" to put on at the pedestle, sone are hard wired, and some are just monitors. Concern about portables is theft. Why do they have to be put at the pedestle? Can't it be connected directlly into the coach and then the cord to the pedestle? Is a monitor enough? Thanks for your feedback.

  • Bought one even before I had the coach in the driveway. Cheep insurance. I don't worry about it walking away. I think my bikes and other stuff might go first.

The permanent mounted units are pretty nice with remote displays and such but if you go that direction just make sure you can bypass it incase of a problem. Power cord end units are pretty simple, plug and play.

The portable types have molded male and female ends so you options are limited beyond plugging the unit into the power pedestal.
  • What you want is a Progressive Industries HW50C. It mounts in your electrical bay and has a remote display. Theft is not a worry this way. You can get it at Camping World (mail order only), Tweetys, RVUpgradestore.com and so on.

It's secondary function is surge protection, its primary is power management and protection from poor wiring and electrical faults at the power pedestal. It carries a lifetime guarantee.
  • We have the one from Camping World and they sell a locking thing so it is protected.
  • Hi,

If you must have one (I don't, and probably never will) then Progressive Dynamics is the way to go.
