I'm pretty sure that the suggestion to check your owner's manual is not out of date though. ;)
Unfortunately it is.
Technology those days go forward so fast, that by the time the engine design leaves engineer desk and actually goes into vehicle, the oil grades are already outdated.
That is one of the reason why synthetics, that suppose to be good for 25,000 miles are still following dino manuals giving them only 10,000 miles.
Few years ago, when I drove my Superduty lot of miles, I took my time and send samples of different oils at different intervals to lab for testing.
That combined with some research let me draw my own conclusions.
Test cost $25, so don't hesitate to use it.
I believe if you follow the owner manual you will ALWAYS be safe, even if you do have what MAY BE a better alternative available.
Way back when, Mobile Oil introduced a 100% synthetic oil that, according to all of their advertising hype, was fantastic. It gave better lubrication and extended oil change intervals. Unfortunately, after all of their research and testing, it proved to be a disaster for many users and resulted in the AV-1 brand of aviation oil being pulled from the market and a massive class action suit filed.
Mobile paid millions to people with damaged engines.
When you decide to try something different from what the owner's manual recommends, you become the Guinea Pig. The new oil may live up to the advertising hype, or it may not. It is your engine and your choice.
