Tag axle pros / cons

Hi, I am thinking of upgrading to a used diesel pusher and would like to hear some opinions on the good and bad of a tag axle. I understand the tag can carry more weight and am not sure yet if I will be looking at 40 foot or bigger. It does seem to me like many of the upper end models have a tag. I also would be interested in some opinions on engine size for a 40 footer. I have researched a bit and saw some rough guides of 30,000 lbs= 300 hp, 36,000= 360 hp , etc. Any thoughts on Cat vs Cummins and any bad or good years for either? I know I'm asking a lot and expect many different opinions. Thanks in advance. Ken
  • With a heavy 12 or 15 liter diesel engine hanging off the rear, I would definitely want a tag axle.
  • In new RV with all those gadgets you have to have tag just for axle allowable load.
In my trips I have seen 6 axle dump trucks and have a feeling this is where RV is going.
Older coaches had tag mainly for stabilization.
I am talking about about the chassis that was design this way, or the other, as lot of RV builders add tag to cover up 12' frame extension what brings integrity questions.
  • Have a lot of experience with tour buses and I think the excess wear on the tag axle tires from "scrubbing" in turns would be the only negative. High end buses have tag axle steering to follow the duals and eliminate most of that wear. Don't know if this technology is on motorhomes yet.
