Taking Wine into Canada

We are on a 49 day caravan in Canada. When we entered New Brunswick, we declared 2 opened 5 liter boxes of wine. It was probably about 4 liters per person. They let us through without paying anything or taking our wine. We knew that we were officially allowed 1.5 liters per person. The 8 liters will not last us 49 days, and we wonder if we could have have taken in five 5 liter boxes (25 liters) and paid duty on the excess. We buy our wine in Maryland for $18 per 5 liter box, and 5 liter boxes in Prince Edward Island go for $43.

Canadian citizens on our caravan tell us that they stock up on US alcohol, pay the duty, and the total price is "less than 1/2" of the cost to buy in Canada. Does anyone know if two US citizens could take in 25 liters, and pay the required duty? If so, how much the duty would be?

I have tried Google searches, but can't find any information about US citizens paying duty on excess wine.

Any applicable experience or website links that would answer these questions would be most appreciated.

  • Well if the boxes were open there is virtually no chance you importing for resale.
  • I don't know what the duty is for bringing in alcohol, but I do know booze is expnsive in Canada. We usually buy a 1.75 liter bottle of SKYY Vodka for $21.85 at home. A .75 liter bottle costs $27.99 in Canada.
  • My 3 trips to Canada, at their border check, they always ask about 1)"defensive firearms" and 2)booze. I always answer that we have wine for personal use. That's it.
  • LOL. Laws are funny. Take yeast, honey, and in 2 days you can have some meade matey!
