Tanks sizes?

I purchased my first RV last week (will use it to attend dog events with my whippets) and have lots of newbie questions! First off, I have been unable to find the sizes for my various water tanks (fresh, gray and black). I wonder if anyone here has that information? I have a 1998 Coachmen Catalina 22RK, Ford E350. TIA!

  • According to the owner's manual (which doesn't say how big the tanks are ...) you are supposed to fill the fresh water tank until the gauge on the wall in the kitchen says it's full ... Since I'm alone, that will be difficult to accomplish. There is no overflow that I can see, and no visual at the fill point. I would really like to know how big the tank is ...

Sorry, don't mean to be difficult, and I'm a pretty smart and resourceful person, but I was really just asking if someone with the same model out there had the information ...

However, I will get the flow meter posted above, since once I know how big the tank is, that meter will help me with the solo, no-assistant water fill.
  • much easier way fill tank (if fresh) till over flow then drain in to 5 gal bucket. as far as b-g tanks u could do g the same way after u dump it first.no overflow but will back up in shower

Thanks for the suggestion, skipnchar. It will be a little difficult to do the timed water measurement, as the Coachmen doesn't have the open fresh water port that you just stick a hose in like most rigs I've seen. Instead, you use the same water connection that you would use for a city water hookup, but change the valve positions to fill the fresh water tank.

    !

Why would that matter? As suggested, use the hose to time a gallon of water. Now hook it to the camper. Time how long the water runs until the tank is full. You must have some way to know when the tanks full. A gauge. Visually? An overflow?
  • Yes, I can either calculate the tank capacities or buy a flow meter, but I was hoping that someone on here might have the same model camper and know how much the tanks hold ... ;-)

I already did the bleach thing, ed6713, but will also do the detergent on the waste tanks--good suggestion!
  • And while you're at it.
Add one cup of household bleach to the fresh water tank then fill it up. That will sanitize the tank for you. Run the pump to circulate the bleach water then let the water sit for a few days before you drain it.
Add a cup of cloths washing detergent to both the black and gray tanks. That will give them a little cleaning. Drive around a bit to let the water slosh around before you dump the tanks.

Now you have killed three birds with one stone.

    Enjoy your new rig.

  • Turn on a water hose and time how long it takes to fill a gallon jug. Next you use it to fill a tank you need information about and do the math. Of course if the belly is not enclosed, you can simply measure the tanks three dimensions and THEN do the math. Of course nothing you find out will change anything and they'll fill at the same rate :) Good luck / Skip
