The skinny on Extended Warranties

Lets share some info (not judgment).

What plan do you have?

Where did you buy it?

What was the cost? (if we tell the truth here it will benefit many people. If we lie to make ourselves seem like big negotiators it helps no one)

What is your deductible?

Have you ever used it?

If so, for what?

If so, was it covered?

If, so what percentage was covered?

Would you buy this same policy again?

There is a huge, HUGE legal difference between a warranty and a service contract.

And, reality is that almost nobody sells a true extended warranty. They sell service contracts, and play with the wording to try to make people think they are buying an extended warranty, when they really are not. They are buying a contract that covers repair or replacement for specific items, in a specific timeframe, and frequently under very specific conditions. All of which are specified by the contract writer, not the buyer.

That is why any time the word 'extended warranty' is mentioned, somebody corrects it, reminding folks that we are really talking about service contracts.

  • Doesn't really matter what I had. The plan is no longer available. The deductible rose from $50 to $500. Plans no longer offer "consequential damage coverage". Previously purchased from Wholesale Warranties. Great guys, and I still recommend them. Current plan is XtraRide, purchased from dealer as it was negotiated into the purchase price.

    Interstate

    Where did you buy it?
    Dealership

Just under 1K a year for 7 yrs.

    What is your deductible?
$100 per shop visit. So if I have two repairs done in one visit it is $100 total deductible.

    Have you ever used it?
    Yes

    If so, for what?
Jacks and leveling system, 2 Televisions, SiriusXm radio with DVD player and screen plus a bunch of Pandora, I pod/phone and Bluetooth stuff, awning motor, furnace board, fan clutch, exhaust manifolds, turbo, refrigerator door. That's what I remember. Right now sounds like washer dryer is possibly going out that is a covered item too.

    If so, was it covered?
    Yes

If, so what percentage was covered?
100% except deductible and special shipping. I don't think they cover shop supplies

Would you buy this same policy again?
    Yes

Seems like sitting here I am forgetting a couple items but total of above repairs is close to 10K. I have 2 years left on warranty. If washer dryer is going out that will be another $1200 they will cover.
Yes it is a Service Agreement. It is an exclusionary ( if not excluded it is covered) contract and it is backed by an insurance company. That is if the company goes out of business my contract will be honored by the insuring company.
