Thinking of downsizing

DW and I have been RVing in a 32 foot Winnebago Class C for the last 8&1/2 years. Before that, we borrowed my parents' 30 foot Concord Class A.

With the kids grown and out on their own, we are thinking of downsizing. We are looking at a Roadtrek Zion. That is the model that DW has her eye on.

Does anyone have any input, good or bad, about that particular model? I know the Roadtrek brand is excellent, but even a good company can have a dud.

I do have one specific question about it. Does anyone know what kind of gas mileage it gets?

Thanks
  • This is very helpful. I will have DW read over the responses too.

Since we have RV'ed off and on for the last 25 years, and both grew up with trailers, we have a fair idea of the "challenges" that a B will give us. Right now, we think the advantages of long distance travel will outweigh the disadvantages of long term parking at one location.
  • I have had 4 Bs and 2 Cs and now am on my way home from 3 months in Florida living in my B. It's not a RT, It's old on a Ford chasis. I've been living the winters in a B for about 10 years. I use cg showers but use the B shower when necessary. I sleep good, eat what and when I want, get the best campsites, and enjoy everything an A has except space. I'm currently getting about 13-15mpg and can hardly hear it run. On the whole... I love it. I am single though, however 2 people who like each other would have no problem. You don't live like you were home but that's the beauty of it.

  • We have a small C and have had three Bs over time. The last two were Roadtreks. One was a 210P and before that a 190P. I seem to recall that the Zion was built for those that didn't want all the bells and whistles common on 190s? In any event it is now on the new RAM chassis and will not have the carrying capacities of the Chevy with the 6L engine.

We left the B World a couple of years ago for a small C because our style of travel had changed. We now spent a week or more in each campsite (normally state or national parks or NFS, BLM, COE). We needed the room, a full dry bath and a permanent bed. We miss our B for its convenience, economy (we got about 14 MPG on our 210P). We also now tow a Jeep which is a bit more hassle in my opinion.

I suspect due to age and interests, at some point we will be B shopping again.

As you know, Bs are more expensive than small Cs due to demand and construction design. Just a fact of life and a given.

There is no question in my mind about one thing: Bs offer more flexibility as to parking, going, doing. They also offer less for living in the coach.

Every RV as you know is a trade off and our needs change with circumstance and time.

  • Had another Roadtrek in the campsite next to me last week; they had downsized from a 30-foot plus motorhome a few years ago and were quite happy about the change. There are trade offs that don't work for everyone, but there are advantages in driving, parking, gas mileage, and not towing. The idea is to mostly live out of a Class B, not so much in it.

One downside is the small shower. We mostly use the campground showers, with no problems. If you want something closer to a real shower, look at small Class C's.
  • Ok, I have a B and will speak in general about the B ... but I don't have a Zion nor do I have a Roadtrek. It depends on your "traveling style". If you like to spend a lot of quality time in a given spot in order to check out all there is on offer; then a B is probably not for you. If, on the other hand, you like to travel more so than camp, you might consider a B.
  • No class B cheerleaders on the forum? I thought by now you'd have 2 or 3 at least, telling you what a good switch it would be.
  • I made a mistake and replied to this question in the solar question.
  • think long & hard abt that, wait till you spend whole day in as bad weather ect
