thinking of traveling hwy 219 thru west virginia

Next week I am traveling from New Orleans to Indiana and then to Johnstown, PA for the Flood City Festival. Unfortunately, the trip to indiana and Pa will be one day drives due to time constraints and family obligation in Indiana. Leaving johnstown on sunday without time constraints and looking to surprise DW with a scenic drive since it will be her birthday. She always nervous when getting off the interstate with the RV but I noticed that US 219 travels s/b from I-68 in Pa to I-81 (close anyways)in Va which is the next interstate I would be connecting to traveling home. Has anyone traveled this route before? I have a 40 ft Winne Ultimate Advantage towing a Jeep and looking to make sure my surprise for her doesn't turn into a surprise for me since it is in a mountainous area. Any reports would be greatly appreciated.
  • I have not traveled 219 for a while but I swear I saw my own tailights on some of the bends. As posted it is hilly and lots of curves. Although it is very scenic. Give yourself a lot of time if you decide to take it.
  • You may like this route but I came down that snake road once with a pick up towing a trailer and it was the worst day of my life. Steep, crooked, slow! Thought I would never get out of there.....
  • thnx wayne. sounds as though i might do the 219 route and will also hit hwy 150 since passing by. hopefully not real steep or tight for us.
  • There will be no coal trucks except on the northern part of 219. There is no coal along the southern parts, once you’ve crossed to the east side of the high mountains. In fact, on the southern part of the route, you should encounter few trucks at all, except for those from Burns Trucking in Marlinton. Most other trucks headed south to I-64 take WV 92 from Huntersville to White Sulphur Springs, not 219. Once you get down to Greenbrier County you are out of the serious mountains.

You will occasionally encounter farm equipment (this is farm country) but they’re not often traveling far via 219, so shouldn’t delay you too long.

Don’t expect to get anywhere too fast on 219, but it is better than most “country roads” in WV. Expect to average about 45 mph or a little better with no problem. Lewisburg is the only town that will likely be much of a delay.

If you really want a slow, torturous route north to south through WV, I suggest WV 20. :)

One side trip I must suggest is the Highland Scenic Highway, Route 150, from 219 at the top of Elk Mountain (north of Marlinton) to WV 39 west of Mill Point. The overlooks are worth your time. Turn left at WV 39 and you’re back to 219 at the foot of the mountain.

  • Thanks Wayne. Mostly interested in nice drive with something besides interstate for awhile. Doing straight all interstate to indiana to visit mother for one day, then driving 1 day to Johnstown becuase niece/son are one of the bands playing there on Saturday. So just looking to actually have something different than interstate going home. I figure whatever interests us we will stop and enjoy before end up back on interstate 81. Like earlier, just want to make sure I wont run into something the RV cant handle cuase that would definately put a damper on the Bday for both of us.
  • Hope you have lots of time to make the trip. I've driven sections of 219 in a car. The highway is mostly 2 lane with some 3 lane sections, lots of twists and turns, significant elevation changes and several small towns to navigate through. Also you will have to deal with coal trucks along this route. It will be scenic and tiring in a motorhome.
  • We live 2 blocks off of 219, in beautiful southern Pocahontas County, WV. 219 is most assuredly scenic. Parts of it are steep and curvy, but should be no problem for a your rig.

What do you want to know? Campgrounds? Sights to see? Interesting side trips?

This web site should provide some good info to start. http://www.traveling219.com/
