Not a doofus at all,but think about it,one less place to store something that could spill or spoil,it is out of the way and easy to miss when rushing to unload,clean and dump. Most renters are given little time to do this upon return. Less cleaning, Quick turnaround,more money.
If you want to use that area just cut an opening in the front panel.
As STEVE-OTR did on his 28A. By accessing the space under his jackknife sofa by opening it up.
