Shocks should not affect ride height at all, they are just dampers. If they were coil-overs, it would be different. I also don't understand why they recommended external oil reservoirs, those are usually only needed for extreme conditions, such as high-speed desert racing.
I have noticed the ride improving on my 33SW. I think the springs are really stiff when new, and seem to be getting softer as I accumulate miles. I'm still just under 10,000 miles though, so I'm not exactly a heavy traveler. I often think they could have built these on F450s and ended up with a better ride, I don't think the "house" is all that heavy as to require a F550.
Have you weighed your rig? The F450 is only rated for about 16,000# GVWR where the F550 is 19500. I have a feeling that when you get into the longer rigs it would be to much for a F450. Now they/you could add air ride suspension on it and that would help a bunch. I had a F550 that I used to haul a large truck camper and had a Kelderman air suspension installed and it improved the ride. If you are really serious about wanting a better ride there are a couple of different after market builders that make systems for the F450/550.
