Actually, it has - early vehicles had a starter button on the floorboard. The military vehicles I drove in the early '70s definitely had them - a button behind the clutch pedal: push the clutch all the way in and your toe contacted the starter switch...

correct. absolutely not the same. my '46 Willys CJ2A has a start button although i added a KEY to the circuit to keep it from walking away.
