The most important things about merging in to highway traffic is that you ONLY know what is going on in your vehicle.
To assume that the other drivers that are zooming by at 70 MPH or so see you is rather foolish. The drivers in the right lane may be more concerned about the truck that is passing them on the left or any number of reasons why they are NOT focused on what you are doing in the merge lane. It is your responsibility to yield to the other drivers that are on the highway and to do it in such a way as to have the least amount of impact on the other drivers.
Wait for the gap in traffic and accelerate like you are in a drag race, NOT like you are out for a daily sightseeing cruise.
