The Pilot/FJs I've been to, will only accept comercial cards at the truck pumps. You have to use the RV/auto islands to pay at the pump. It's all about the fuel tax and maybe rebates for trucks.

Nope, I have been using the PFJ RV card at the truck pumps for many, many years. No worries, no issues. I never use an RV pump but then I use diesel. If you have a gas RV you will need to use the regular or RV pumps but you will still want to use the PFJ card for the savings.
Are there places you can fuel for less? Absolutely! Are you assured to be able to easily get in and out of those facilities? I'll leave that up to you. I frequently fuel elsewhere but not if I am traveling from point A to point B and need fuel. I don't want any surprises and I know what I am getting, I know I will be able to eat and park should either of those be necessary as well.
Flying J was a much better business before they went broke and got purchased by the morons at Pilot but when it makes sense, it just makes sense.
The couple of times I've swiped my card at the truck pumps, it would ask me tractor or reefer. I've never tried going further. When I've then gone inside, I've been told only commercial cards at the truck pumps.
