Tire change tools

Since I go off the beaten path at times I wanted to be able to take a wheel off if needed.

Also to do my own work at home. :h

I guess I need a 3/4" breaker bar but since the wheel lugs are 450-500lbs, how long an extension pipe do I need to slip over that breaker bar to break them loose?

  • I carry a long wrecking bar to help put the tire back on. Lay it under hub and roll the tire on it and use the bar to lift the tire onto studs.
  • I use a 3/4" breaker bar and a 4' length of pipe. I also use a jack stand and a 6" socket extension to remove the lugs on the duals. I use the adjustable jack stand to support the breaker bar with the 6" extension so that I can use the piece of pipe to get the leverage that I need.
The tires are heavy but using a pry bar as leverage it is not that difficult to raise the wheel for the lugs to align. Where the weight of the wheel is a problem is putting the old tire in the basement compartment.
  • Have you weighed a mounted wheel & tire? It is more than my DW can handle by many pounds.
