Tires don't just conveniently go low while you are stopped, allowing you to check pressures. And if one picks up a nail and goes low in the middle of a long drive, you are likely to damage the tire before you become aware of it. And if the tire comes apart in the process, there may be damage to the rig. That is well more than the cost of a TPMS. Not to mention that being alerted to a low tire while driving may allow you to safely drive to the nearest tire shop to get it repaired, rather than sit on the side of the road changing a tire or waiting for ERS.
