The problem here is that you can NOT check your tires while driving. Sure once you stop you can get out and check each one, but that does no good if you pick up a nail in one of your inner duals two minutes after you get back on the road and the tire slowly loses air to the point to where the tire gets hotter and hotter and eventually blows. When it comes apart during the blowout, parts of the tire takes out the inner fender well along with the electrical cabling that the factory idiots decided that it was a good idea to put them. So now you have to replace the tire, much body work and a whole bunch of electrical wiring. The cost? Probably about 10 times what a TPMS would cost. In addition, the other dual supported additional weight for miles prior to the blow out and it also will need replacing from being overloaded.
Of course the TPMS will NOT help you with a catastrophic and instant blowout from a road hazard or tire defect, but it will alert you to loss of air or high temps in plenty of time prior to allow you to stop and prevent the tire from blowing and causing damage.
Why do you think it's now mandatory for auto makers to make tpms standard ?
