I had Toyo Open Country H/Ts for a while, and they had a good ride. I decided to get a commercial grade tire with steel sidewalls and a 3rd steel belt under the tread. These are the Bridgestone Duravis M895 which is the M+S version of the R250. These have been discontinued unfortunately.
All tires have to meet the endurance tests of the FMVSS 139 spec. The question is how much design margin they have. I take tire weight to be a proxy for design margin. For example, the Toyo HTs weigh 39 lbs/tire; the M895s weigh 53 lbs/tire; Michelin M/S2s 38 lbs, Michelin Ribs 49 lbs. All in the 225/75R16 size.
The Firestone Transforce 225/75R16 weighs 35 lbs. Interestingly the 215/85R16 which will also fit the wheel weighs 44 lbs.
