To expand on this good advice:
One one sidewall of each tire is the complete DOT number. The last 4 digits indicate the WEEK and YEAR of production. So 1016 was produced the 10th week of 2016.
Since you will be replacing tires based on age, not tread wear, I would not accept a tire more than 3 months old.
