titleing in fla

I just bought a new motorhome and for tax purposes want to title it in florida. When it was purchased in NC they added the Va sales tax and have now sent me the check and paper work and told us to take it to the local dmv. So that tells me its not titled anywhere. How do I now get it titled in florida? What is necessary to get it regersted and tagged in florida?? Need help from someone who has gone through this??

Thanks

When you bring a vehicle into florida from another state and do the title and registration you have to have the vehicle with you at the time that you are doing the transfer and registration. The will go out to your vehicle in the parking lot an verify the VIN number and the mileage on the speedometer. It cant be done from a remote location.

You can have the VIN/mileage verified by a notary, or ANY law enforcement officer. It is a rare DMV that is big rig friendly. I had an officer/notary at my bank verify my VIN/mileage.

I'm not so sure that is a advantage. I depend on my state's safety inspection to inform me of the safety of my motorhome yearly!!! They find those little things that I miss, or do not know about.

  • I live in Maryland but have a home in Florida so i have gone thru just what you want to do. An advantage to doing this on a used MH is there is no inspection of any kind, but on a new one i'm not sure if it would do anything for you.
You must have a Florida address to use.
You must insure it in Florida.
If you bought it from a dealer in Florida, only the dealer can title it for you. For some odd reason you cannot do this yourself so it is advisable to have a bill of sale from a private owner. If you bought yours from a dealer outside of Florida i'm not sure how it would work so check.
You still pay taxes in Florida and it's probably about the same rate as NC.
Florida charges an initial registration fee of $225. You get charged this everytime you need tags but if the tags are transfered to another MH it doesn't apply.
MVa doesn't issue titles in Florida, the tax collection offices do. This is where you will find the application online.
Honestly, other than not having an inspection(which can get expensive) i don't see why you would want to do this. It is probably cheaper in NC....

We've gone through this a lot on here, and willful tax evasion is frowned upon, at least by me.

Register it where you live, or where you're legally entitled to.
  • Often, one of the mail forwarding services working in states where we RVers full-time (out of) will have your answers. For example, the service we use in SD takes care of our registrations for us. Florida may have similar possibilities.

And, yes... the DMV also has the answers but the mail forwarders know what the answers are in reference to full-timing and know how to work through them.
  • ".....for tax purposes want to title it in florida."

Sounds like 'tax evasion' which could land you in trouble with VA & FL
  • As far as I know you need to be a Florida resident or have a Florida Corporation. If you have it registered to a Corporation your RV becomes a commercial vehicle and that has different insurance requirements.
You can get a lot of good information here but most of the information is an opinion. You need to call a Florida DMV office and ask them or contact a lawyer.
  • Your gonna need an address in Florida to begin the process. Your also going to need Florida Insurance- that's a must, it must be insured in the state it is registered in.
When I purchased my Old Eagle I used my Daughters address, flew down and went to DMV with the Title and a check, Paid the sales tax, Title transfer fee and 1st years registration. Been registered there for 13 years. I park it in Indiana 2 months a year.
