Toad affect on mileage

I will be traveling to Alaska next year and am attempting to determine if it is worth towing the toad (Ford Edge crossover). I currently get about 7.2 Mpg with the toad, but have not traveled without it. What improvement can I expect in mileage without the toad? I have a Sunstar 26P, gas Ford V10.

  • I have tracked this as well, 1-1.5 mpg towing jeep wrangler 4 down. 33' moho vortec 8.1.

any increase in gas mileage will likely be negligible. my MPG records indicate no real change in MPG between towing and not towing. any savings in gas will be more than offset by the cost of renting cars.
  • I don't notice any difference towing my Chevy HHR. If you allow 1 MPG penalty for towing, because of the mountains, I'm sure that the fuel penalty will be a lot less than the cost of a rental vehicle and you will also lose the advantage of having an "emergency" vehicle with you at all times.
