The surge brake systems are self adjusting. If I pull anything that relies on a controller for the braking effort I get on gravel and turn up the gain until the tires skid when the brakes are manually applied and leave it there.
My only concern with surge brakes is that engine braking on long hills could cause the toad brakes to drag for an extended period which might lead to glazing of the brakes. I really don't think it would happen but it is a concern.
