I have no argument with the current regulatory standards for towing and supplementary brake systems. I can depend on the manufacturers of the equipment to make it as safe as possible since otherwise they face significant liability issues. Our highly litigious society seems to keep most manufacturers in line (except GM!).
Having said that I really would like the lack of regulation to be uniform and included in the Federal highway safety laws, that way I would not have to think about complying with 49 different state regulations (I left out Hawaii for obvious reasons).
