Toad trouble

We just got back from a short trip, 212 miles one way. The passengers side front tire of our Jeep Wrangler wore all the tread off on the way down. Has any one had this happen to them. The tire was a 10" all terrain. Tire did not loose air.
  • we have a 2012 Jeep LIberty auto. Steering wheel never locks, even with the key removed. Is a caliper sticking?
  • Had the same thing happen to a friend of mine while towing his Jeep from Atlanta to Chesapeake area. We never figured out what happened. I believe it the steering was locked, both fronts would have been worn.
  • Nope, one time I did forget to unlock steering wheel and someone flagged me down with a couple of mile of hooking up. Sounds to me like something was locked up and tire was "dragging" somehow. How is the front suspension and steering components, perhaps a problem there.
  • disabling jeep steering wheel lock

You may need a set of TORX security bits to complete this project. It took me a little over an hour to do it.

Now all I do is start it up put the transmission in drive, transfer case in neutral, then the transmission back to park. Done!
  • 2009 and newer Wranglers don't lock. If it is a newer one, there is a big problem with binding somewhere.
  • for what it's worth it's easy to remove the lock in the Jeep ignition switch, and that also means you don't need to leave the key in the ignition.
  • Have you towed it successfully in the past?

Did you have the transmission and transfer case set properly?
  • sounds like the steering wheel locked. was the jeep otherwise hooked up properly? transfer case in neutral, tranny in park? we had that happen a few years back outside of Nashville. our '03 wrangler was hooked up properly and the steering wheel was free but as near as we can tell the steering wheel locked up when we hit a pothole.
